Decompression of the facial nerve in cases of hemifacial spasm.

چکیده
a ) Primary hemifacial spasm, by some authors termed "cryptogenic", "idiopathic" or "autonomous". In reviewing 106 cases Ehni and Woltm a n 5 gave the fo l lowing characteristics of this group: (1) the spasms are of an intermittent, twitching nature, ( 2 ) the eyel ids on the ipsilateral side are almost always involved, ( 3 ) the spasms are usually unilateral and when bilateral they are not synchronous or equal in extent or severity, (4 ) the spasms may persist in sleep, (5 ) the patient does not feel any compulsion to make the movement, (6 ) the patient is unable to stop the movement by exercise of the will , ( 7 ) the patient cannot reproduce the movement voluntarily, (8 ) psychic upsets of any sort, fatigue and voluntary movements of the face, make the condition worse, (9 ) children do not have hemifacial spasm and (10 ) the spasms are limited to muscles innervated by the facial nerve.

HEMIFACIAL SPASM: A RERORT OF 100 CASES TREATED BY MICROVASCULAR DECOMPRESSION
100 patients with hemifacial spasm treated by microvascular decompression are presented. There were 60 females and 40 males. Their ages ranged from 29 to 75 years with a median age of 54 years, and the left side was involved predominantly. The common focal signs were facial nerve palsy in 41 cases, diminished hearing in 14 cases, trigeminal neuralgia in 11 cases, and homolateral trigeminal...

Reported are a total of 81 microsurgical operations for cranial nerve root decompression comprising of 66 trigeminal, 10 facial, one vestibular, one vagus and three accessory nerve dysfunction syndromes from 1983 to 1990. Almost all cases of trigeminal neuralgia (TNG) secondary to vascular (59 cases) and minute mass (10 cases) compression, and those with hemifacial spasm (HFS) (nine out o...
متن کاملSecondary or Symptomatic Hemifacial Spasm caused by a Tumor of Cerebellopontine Angle Case Report and Review of the Literature
Background & Importance: Primary hemifacial spasm is usually caused by microvascular compression of the facial nerve at its root exit zone at brainstem without any space-occupying pathology. Secondary or so-called symptomatic hemifacial spasm has an additional underlying pathology e.g. tumors leading to the microvascular compression. We review and discuss the pathophysiology and the literature ...
متن کاملHemifacial spasm caused by a cerebellopontine angle arachnoid cyst. Case report and literature review.
Arachnoid cysts involving the cerebellopontine angle are an unusual cause of hemifacial spasm. The case is reported of a 71-year old woman presenting with a right hemifacial spasm and an ipsilateral arachnoid cyst. Preoperative magnetic resonance imaging findings suggested a neurovascular compression caused by displacement of the facial-acoustic complex and the anterior inferior cerebellar arte...
متن کاملIntractable Hemifacial Spasm Treated by Pulsed Radiofrequency Treatment
Hemifacial spasm is defined as unilateral, involuntary, irregular twitching of all or parts of the muscles innervated by facial nerves. Here, we present a case of recurrent hemifacial spasm after microvascular decompression (MVD) treated with pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) treatment with good results. A 35-year-old woman suffered from recurrent hemifacial spasm after MVD that was refractory to med...
متن کاملMicrovascular decompression for hemifacial spasm: evaluating outcome prognosticators including the value of intraoperative lateral spread response monitoring and clinical characteristics in 293 patients.
Hemifacial spasm is a socially disabling condition that manifests as intermittent involuntary twitching of the eyelid and progresses to muscle contractions of the entire hemiface. Patients receiving microvascular decompression of the facial nerve demonstrate an abnormal lateral spread response (LSR) in peripheral branches during facial electromyography. The authors retrospectively evaluate the ...
